Five Styling Tips for Oversized Woolen Scarves
Posted by Shaurya Bastola on
Scarves have been around for centuries, though they started making an appearance as fashionable items only in the 1920s. Then, thanks to famous personalities like Jimi Hendrix and The Beatles, scarves earned a permanent spot in pop culture in the 1960s.
Today, however, most people still only think of scarves as a warm addition to their outfits, especially an oversized woolen scarf. Of course, oversized woolen scarves are a great way to keep yourself warm, especially during the upcoming winter months, but these scarves can do a lot more than keep us cozy in the harsh winter nights of north American countries like Canada and the US.
Woolen scarves are a great but often overlooked accessory where styling outfits is concerned. Because of their size and free shape, they offer the flexibility to be draped and worn in different ways to match different attires and situations.
Here are some quick and easy ways you can style an oversized woolen scarf.
1. The vintage drape
Draping the scarf around your neck is the most classic, simple way you can wear this dynamic clothing item. You can fold it in half to create a long rectangle and have both ends fall straight down the front of your body. Or, you can loop one end around your neck and pull off an asymmetrical drape which looks great on casual fits.
2. The elegant wrap
You can transform any oversized scarf into an elegant wrap by folding it into a triangle and draping it over your shoulders so that the two ends fall in front of you, around your forearms. Then, take those two ends from the front to behind you and tie them into a loose knot. This pairs great with dresses or corset tops and skirts.
You can try this style with silk wool scarves as well. Silk wool scarves have a slightly more delicate and dainty appearance, and the rich, gentle sheen of silk-wool texture goes perfectly well with dresses and skirts.
3. The one-shouldered shawl
If you’re going for an indoor look that’s elegant and mysterious at the same time, consider draping your oversized scarf on just one shoulder. This is especially flattering on full-length dresses. You can use a few pins or cloth tape if you need to fasten the scarf to your dress so that you can move without worrying it’ll fall off. For a sophisticated and plush look, use a classy piece of brooch to pin your wool scarf to your attire. This way, you will have a look that is both stylish and functional.
4. The belted look
This look is similar to the vintage/classic look where you bunch up the scarf, drape it around your neck, and let it fall down the front of your body. Now to add a dash of sass, fasten a classic brown or black belt over this look. Finish the look with a long coat or jacket. Countries like Canada tend to get really cold in the winter months. A chic and sassy style such as this will keep your fashion quotient high and will also protect you from the harsh winter days and nights.
5. The makeshift hoodie
Because oversized woolen scarves have so much material to work with, you can easily create a makeshift hoodie or headscarf with them. Fold the scarf into two, lengthwise. This will give you a long, rectangular-shaped cloth. Place this over your head, with a little bit of the scarf left on one side and more left on the other. Now, the longer side can be loosely wrapped around your neck a few times to complete the cowl-like hoodie look.
6. The chunky neck scarf
In the classic casual-wear style, you can wear your oversized woolen scarf as a chunky neck wrap with any outerwear. For example, roughly bunch up the scarf and wrap it around your neck multiple times to create a thick, chunky look that can be worn on top of a long buttoned-up trench coat. You can also do this with sweaters or jackets for a casual but chic outdoorsy look.
Pure wool scarves are timeless, both as a protective item of clothing as well as a fashion statement. There are numerous ways to drape a scarf, customize your look, and give it that touch of magic unique to your style. Hope you found this post helpful!
